The Birmingham Public Library has one of the best genealogy facilities.  The room above has books from each state lining the walls.  They're old census indexes, histories of counties and states; stories, marriage licenses, birth and death records.  They also have information on microfiche, plus they have filing cabinets with surname information placed there by individuals who are doing research on them.  This gives people a copy of what has been found on that name, plus contact information.  It's an amazing place!

Your library is one place to begin researching the family.  You might even find where someone has written a history on your family and donated it to the research library.

Another facility available, possibly in your area, but definitely online is the Family Search CenterThis is a site sponsored by the Latter Day Saints (Mormons).  There's one located in Birmingham area:
Birmingham Alabama 2780 Altadena Rd
Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama, United States
Phone: 205-967-7279
Hours: Wednesday 10am-8pm; Tues 10am-5pm; and Sat 10am-2pm.
Closed: All holidays and first and fifth Sat of every month
Attention: Please call ahead

The Birmingham Library can order microfilm from the church as well.

You can check out my family genealogy blog site Harper's of GA, AL, SC, NC, TN & TX.  Check out the timeline I inserted so that you might get and idea of what was happening in the world around their lifetime, here.

Love the library photos. I have always loved libraries -- they are magical places. They have "answers"... or they point you to the answers :-)
