The Birmingham Public Library has one of the best genealogy facilities. The room above has books from each state lining the walls. They're old census indexes, histories of counties and states; stories, marriage licenses, birth and death records. They also have information on microfiche, plus they have filing cabinets with surname information placed there by individuals who are doing research on them. This gives people a copy of what has been found on that name, plus contact information. It's an amazing place!
Your library is one place to begin researching the family. You might even find where someone has written a history on your family and donated it to the research library.
